Graphic designing — also known as communication design – uses visuals to solve problems and communicate ideas through colours, typography, imagery, form, and even words. It is a skill that focuses on the interpretation of a brand’s message visually and expressing the concepts and ideas aesthetically, using various graphic elements and tools.
The following are several types of graphic design, each with their own area of specialization;
1. Visual Identity Graphic Design
A brand identity is how the organization communicates its personality, tone, and essence, as well as memories, emotions, and experiences. Visual identity graphic design is exactly that: the visual elements of brand identity that act as the face of a brand to communicate those intangible qualities through images, shapes, and colour. This can be both Visual & Verbal Identity .
2. Marketing and Advertising Graphic Design
Marketing designers work with company owners, directors, managers or marketing professionals to create assets for marketing strategies. They might work alone or as a part of an in-house or creative team. A designer can specialize in a specific type of media or create a broad assortment of collateral for print, digital, and beyond.
3. User Interface Graphic Design
A UI includes all of the things a user interacts with the – screen, keyboard, and mouse-but in the context of graphic design, UI design focuses on the user’s visual experience and the design of on-screen graphic elements like buttons, menus, micro-interactions, and more.
4. Environmental Graphic Design
Environmental Graphic Design involves various design disciplines including graphic, architectural, interior, landscape, and industrial design. It is concerned with the visual aspects of communicating identity and information in shaping the idea of creating experiences that connect people to places.
Environmental graphic design visually connects people to places to improves their overall experience by making spaces more memorable, interesting, informative or easier to navigate.
5. Packaging Graphic Design
Packaging designers create concepts, develop mockups and create print-ready files for a product. This requires experts knowledge of print processes and a keen understanding of industrial design and manufacturing.
6. Motion Graphic Design
This is simply graphic in “motion”, which can include animations, audio, imagery, video and other effects that are used in online media, television, and film. “Motion graphics designer” is a somewhat new specialty for designers. As technology has improved and video content are highly demanded, motion graphic design has gained immense popularity.
Motion graphics are formally reserved for TV and film, but with technological advances, they have reduced production time and costs, which makes the art form more accessible and affordable.
