Over the years I’ve been speaking with other designers, entrepreneurs and businesses about their brands. I’ve come to realizes that many factors are involved when it comes to a business’s growth or failure, and high-income skills are the lifeblood of any brand.
I’ve recognized a similar pattern among successful entrepreneurs. These patterns are also seen in top brands like Coca-Cola, Nike, Apple, etc.
These brands have developed three high-income skills that they know how to leverage. These skills are:
- Branding
- Marketing
- Sales
Over the years, a successful business continually improves in these three high income skills. Many spend millions of dollars to trains staff and personnel in these areas. However, more than developing these three individual skills, you must learn how to integrate them and leverage their exponential power.
1. Branding
This high income skill is important because it is what makes a memorable impression on consumers and allows a brand’s customers to know what to expect. It is a memorable way the brand distinguishes itself from their competitors and clarifying what they offer that makes them the better choice.
It is about establishing meanings inside the heads of your prospects and customers. In essence, branding is about positioning, and therefore it is the most strategic activity of the three.
2. Marketing
Whether it’s a traditional or digital form of marketing, it is about getting in front of your ideal customers and making offers to them. This includes how you communicate and tell the story about the brand. Marketing is another high income skill that involves promoting a business’ products or services to its target audience.
There is a blurred line between branding and marketing. It helps to think of branding as a part of your offering because it is about building value and meaning through attraction. In contrast, marketing is mostly about getting your message out and building relationships.
3. Sales
How a brand sells matters because the sale is the cash flow and lifeblood of every business. It is a high-income skill that is about converting interest into belief in an outcome and hence creating revenue.
Most successful companies out there are good in at least two out of the three skills above. The truly great companies and entrepreneurs know how to succeed in all three, and thereby getting exponential results.
Together, Branding, Marketing, and Selling are the high income skills that can create a flywheel for your business.
Your branding skills establish you as a thought-leader and authority in your field, growing your influence.
Your marketing skills convert your brand into leads, prospects, or maybe even customers. The more influence you have, the better your marketing will work.
Your sales skills convert your prospects into paying clients and customers. Your most important sales skill is to get people to BELIEVE that what you offer will provide them with the outcome they want.
The punchline? Learn each high income skill separately, then learn how to combine them and get the flywheel working for you.
