The major difference between online business and offline business is just one thing – speed. No matter what any “guru” preach to you, I have both offline and online businesses, and I will always tell you that online business feels faster to me. The joy of setting up a digital product and making sales with funnels in less than 24hours or the idea of teaching thousands of students via my online academic platform is bliss.
Running a business offline, you will have to rely on word of mouth, posting banners or sharing flyers and business cards, or talking to people in real life (which is kinda hard if you’re an introvert like me).
So follow me closely as I’ll show you how to start an online business in a very easy 4 steps:
Step 1: Decide What You Want To Sell
It could be a service or a digital/physical product. Take out your notepad and jot down your ideas and skills. This will quicken your decision.
For example, I am a good writer and designer. So I thought, what are the things I need to sell online considering my expertise?
I sell online courses and even help others host their courses. I coach, create content for top brands, sell eBooks, and sell other digital marketing services.
“But what if I want to sell my other skills?”
Yes! Feel free to do so.
There are tons of skills and services you can sell online. You just need to decide on one thing (or more) you can do. It could be turning one of your skills into an eBook or a video course.
But please note that once you have decided, your next job is to drive traffic to it.
Step 2: Drive Traffic To The Offer
This is the part where most people quit. Yes! it is one of the most difficult parts of your online business journey. But you won’t quit, because you’ve been built differently. Right? (the only answer to this question is, “Yes”)
But what does driving traffic to your offer mean? It’s just a term for ‘making as many people as possible, view or visit your offers.’
The method of driving traffic to your offer differs, depending on what you’re selling.
For example, if you are using your social media platform with a large following, you can drive traffic to your offers by posting a link to the list of your products or your booking form where people can fix a time for a discovery call for your services.
If you have a B2B (business to business) company, and you sell professional services like website design, another way to drive traffic is by sending cold emails.
Driving traffic is scary for many beginners because they fear being judged or feeling rejected if nobody buys. Their ego gets in the way. And they quit. Don’t let your ego ruin your chances of winning.
The world rewards courage. And driving traffic requires courage.
Step 3: Convert Traffic Into Sales
There are several ways to convert the traffic you drive into sales. The most important thing is knowing the right skillset to persuade strangers into buying your offer.
For example, if you’re selling online courses, write a great catchy description explaining the value buyers will get from it. Spell out every benefit of the course and not the features.
If you’re selling digital services, don’t be afraid to get on a sales call with prospects. When you have the chance to have a call with someone likely needing your service, explain the value of your offer, what they seem to enjoy if they work with you.
The bottom line is; Providing VALUE is the key to making money.
The value you offer people in your online business journey could be helping them to solve a burning problem/pain or helping them achieve their goals.
Step 4: Take Action
See this as a ‘bonus step’. Don’t get so attached to problems you still don’t have, like choosing a niche.
Focus on getting your first clients. You can do so by reaching out to friends and family first. They already know you to trust you with their business, even if it’s at a discount.
But you grow your client base, get testimonials of people you’ve worked with. This will help you build trust to get more prospects.
