5 Essential Qualities of a Transformational Leader

In many organizations today, leaders enhance the morale, performance, and motivation of the employees. This is because there are certain core qualities the majority of leaders possess. However, transformational leaders are leaders that have the ability to make an impact on organizational growth. They seek to create a positive change in those who follow.

Transformational leaders inspire change driven by strong purposes and are able to create a culture of trust and innovation within the organization. This is why businesses spend a lot of money on developing the next level of leadership capabilities in their employees, through training programs, mentoring, and skill development programs.

Once listened to an old lecture of Fela Durotoye, and note below five of the most essential qualities of a transformational leader, to help you determine how to apply the concept to your own life, business and leadership experience.

1. Vision

A leader must have a vision greater than oneself. This is because the benefit of a vision is always larger than the carrier of the vision. It is a desirable picture of a destination that compels to embark on a journey & stay on course regardless of how far it seems or how long it will take or how rough the road ahead of it.

Transformational leaders have a vision of what they want to achieve and the ability to clearly communicate this vision so that everyone in the organization understands what is needed to achieve this vision.

2. Responsibility

A leader must accept responsibilities to make things happen. Being a leader often requires you being responsible to make tough decisions. Transformational leaders do not shy away from difficult situations. They take responsibility for their decisions with a clear focus on the values and goals of the organization.

3. Belief

An illusion is a desire with no plan, no strategy and no action taken to fulfill it. A leader believes they can make a personal change. They are visionary rather than an illusionary, and be willing to go out on a limb for something they believe in.

Transformational leaders are highly internally motivated with their core beliefs, and they use this motivation to direct the organization to the right path.

4. Courage

Transformational leaders have the courage to define new possibilities. They die first in the course of transforming. A leader must be courageous to face anything and anyone. They have a willingness to take on new challenges, take calculated risks, and make tough decisions.

Transformational leaders have the courage to create a vision and make the difficult decision necessary to achieve their vision.

5. Adaptability

A transformational leader understands the needs to change. They are willing to listen and entertain new ways to respond to a constantly changing business environment. They are willing to adapt to new situations and seek creative ways to respond to the dynamic environment.

For example, they can take an audience, often irrespective of that audience’s background, and bring about a significant change in their opinions of a particular topic.
